Bearing Nomenclature & Clearance Guide

Understanding the technical suffixes, clearance prefixes, and material ratings used in industrial procurement.

Suffix & Prefix Reference

  • HK / BK: Drawn cup needle roller bearing with open ends (HK) or closed end (BK).
  • NA / RNA: Needle bearing with inner ring (NA) or without inner ring (RNA) running on shaft.
  • RS / 2RS: Single (RS) or double (2RS) synthetic NBR rubber seals for grease retention.
  • TN / TV: Polyamide cage (glass fiber reinforced) for low frictional drag and quiet running.

Clearance & Housing Fits

  • CN (Normal): Standard clearance when mounted on nominal tolerance shafts.
  • C3 (Loose): Greater clearance; used to compensate for tight housing press-fits.
  • F6 / G6 Fit: Shaft raceway tolerance requirements for inner-ringless (RNA) configurations.
  • H7 / J7 Fit: Housing bore tolerance requirements for press-fitting thin-walled outer rings.

Bearing Selection & Sizing Guide

Critical engineering parameters, structure details, and operating limits to help you select the ideal component.

Compact Radial Profile

Drawn cup needle rollers offer the thinnest radial cross-section of all rolling bearings. Ideal for compact machinery setups where radial envelope space is highly restricted.

Shaft as Inner Raceway

By selecting RNA style bearings, the rolling needles run directly on a hardened and ground shaft. This completely eliminates the inner ring, saving dynamic space and assembly weight.

Oscillating Loads

Supports high radial loads relative to its compact thickness. Heavily used in vehicle transmissions, motorcycle engines, universal joints, textile machinery, and printer rollers.

Target Environments

Common Industrial Applications

These bearings are engineered to deliver reliable rotation and support critical equipment in harsh sectors, including:

Gearbox Shafts

Provides high load capacity in minimal radial space inside compact automotive gearboxes.

Valve Trains

Supports oscillating rocker arm pivots inside high-RPM internal combustion engines.

Hydraulic Pumps

Sustains high pressures inside gear pumps and compact axial piston pumps.

Power Tools

Fits inside the tight gear housings of hand drills, angle grinders, and chainsaws.

Their extremely low cross-sectional height. This allows them to carry very heavy radial loads while using the same spatial footprint as a plain bushing.
Yes. If the shaft is hardened (58-64 HRC) and ground, you can use needle cages directly on it without an inner ring, further minimizing radial space requirements.
Because the rollers are long and thin, even minor shaft misalignment causes severe stress concentration at the roller ends, leading to premature fatigue and failure.
